About TPES

Torrey Pines Elementary is located upon a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California. We are part of a wonderful, close-knit, residential neighborhood. Many TPES students walk or ride their bikes to school.

TPES provides a rigorous academic environment for approximately 485 children in Grades K-5. Researched teaching methodologies are used to advance each student to his or her next level of success in all academic areas. Our mission is to provide an environment conducive to student learning where each child feels successful, achieves academically, and thinks critically.

Administrators, teachers, parents, and the community work together to create and maintain a comprehensive curriculum based on student needs and state standards. The La Jolla YMCA is across the street from TPES and is an important partner in our extended childcare, sports enrichment, and P.E. programs.

An important part of our success is our parent involvement. TPES parents volunteer many hours to the school, helping with everything from reading to science to art. In addition, parents raise funds for curriculum support. Through the TPES Foundation, our families and friends fund several programs, including Visual and Performing Arts, Science, Spanishand Sports Enrichment programs, as well as smaller class sizes. This means that we are able to include education in subject areas that we consider important but that are no longer fully funded by our state and federal governments.

Mission Statement

To provide an environment conducive to student learning in which each child feels successful, achieves academically, and thinks critically; and in which teachers, students, administrators, parents, and community members work together to create and maintain a comprehensive curriculum based on student needs and state standards.

What's Been Said About TPES

"The minute you step onto the Torrey Pines campus, you realize that this is not just a place for children, but a place for families. Parents know they belong here, and you see it in their casual manner, hear it as they help shepherd the morning rush of children, and feel it as they eagerly meet your eyes with comfortable smiles. As classrooms come to order, they settle into every available nook and cranny of the campus to discuss various fundraisers and projects, their often flavorfully accented English reaching boldly across cultural divides. Parents are foremost among the many community members who figure so vitally in our school’s success. Their contributions enrich the school immeasurably, and they will attest to the fact that the roles they take on to strengthen our school enrich their families as well. This reciprocity derives from a well defined, well-communicated, shared vision of the roles that the larger community play in a world-class school." - TPES Parent
