March 12, 2020 - Dear Torrey Pines Families,
Thank you to those parents who reached out recently regarding the District Survey you received this past weekend. I understand families need more information about the options before making a decision about children's return to campus.
Please know that the District plans to send a second survey with more clear information about your choices before your family is asked to make a commitment to your preferred learning option.
It was wonderful to see so many students, parents and teachers at this month's Student in the Spotlight assemblies. It is a real delight to celebrate so many examples of excellence in both students’ academic achievement and character development.
One of the gifts of my position as a site administrator is being able to see the fruition of staff and family efforts in the words, actions and performance of the children we serve. On Tuesday, March. 9, I was able to share this incredible teaching and learning with our Area Superintendent, Mitzi Merino, during her third Instructional Visit of the school year.
During these visits, the Superintendent and I visit a series of classrooms in a consecutive fashion, each for a short period of time such as 5 - 7 minutes. By focusing intently on what one or two students are doing in each of the classrooms, we can generate larger patterns and trends of student behavior across the campus.
Here is what Superintendent Merino and I found:
TPES teachers consistently hold high expectations for all students; the level of cognitive engagement is noteworthy across multiple classrooms. Academic language flourishes in conversations. Opportunities to connect current learning with existing schema abound.
The instruction students are engaged in is meaningful and relevant. Small groups and conferring sessions match students’ needs.
Students feel comfortable asking and answering questions because our teachers create safe and warm conditions for children to take risks.
Staff are intentional about engaging students who may be new to learning English or who may need additional learning support and tools to participate with their peers.
Classroom teachers, paraeducators, other service providers, education specialists, resource teachers and on-site teachers regularly collaborate outside of the live instructional time to create the best live student experience possible.
While I know online learning is not ideal, the professionalism exhibited by our team of teachers was praised widely by our Area Superintendent. As we move into Phase Two, it will be important to continue to deliver rigorous instruction regardless of setting.
Sometimes we are so consumed with the daily “ins” and “outs” of the really hard work that we miss out on some very stellar results of our efforts. Student in the Spotlight assemblies, along with Instructional Visits, remind us that there is so much good going on here at TPES!
Have a super evening!
