Safe and Healthy Routes for All

Challenge

Cliffridge Avenue has a history of traffic collisions and near-misses with vehicles and pedestrians because of its lack of quality streetscape infrastructure. The cul-de-sac bulb, mid-block crossing, three-way intersection at Scenic Place, and Safety Patrol need coordinated improvement.

Opportunity

This community-led project will create temporary improvements to reimagine the route to Torrey Pines Elementary School (TPES), Dan McKinney YMCA (YMCA), Cliffridge Park, and trails by our multicultural community of all ages and abilities.

Community Value

Community-led temporary improvements will lead to long-term, sustainable improvements that are safer, healthier, equitable, and inclusive for our community. Residents and visitors will be safer, healthier, and happier as they access these facilities with little risk of traffic collisions.

Get Involved

Our grass-roots leadership team is led by parents from TPES Foundation and local community members and neighbors in partnership with leaders from TPES, San Diego Unified School District, YMCA, and the City of San Diego. We are looking to engage with a broad, diverse range of community members so please reach out to get involved!

Progress

Our leadership team has been involved in the following actions and improvements:

  • Growing our leadership team with community partner representation through outreach to neighbors and community partners
  • Implemented new mid-block crosswalk signage
  • Produced educational Safety Patrol video
  • Added temporary signage to support back-to-school pick-up/drop-off experience
  • Coordinated landscape maintenance with the city to ensure clear sidewalks and view of signage
  • Provided insights and feedback regarding future streetscape improvements with other community partners from the school, school district, and La Jolla Youth Inc.
  • Identified and submitted grant applications and continue to seek additional funding sources
