Jan. 22, 2021 - Dear TPES families,
We are looking forward to a safe and efficient Distribution Day next Wednesday, January 27. Please note Grade 2 is not participating in the upcoming Distribution Day.
For the safety of our community, please refrain from chatting with your child’s teacher on January 27. We ask that you quickly pop your trunk so we can place materials inside and procedures moving quickly.
For those families wishing to make ONE trip to school, please come at your oldest student’s grade level time. After dropping by the tent staffed by the oldest child’s teacher, please drive to the last tent. This will have a sign indicating Younger Grade Distribution. After providing the name and teacher of your younger student(s), staff will distribute the materials.

Jan. 8, 2021 - Dear TPES Community,
I hope you are having a great first week back after the winter holiday. Teachers and students have wasted no time continuing the important work of teaching and learning.
On Tuesday, January 5, our Area Superintendent, Mitzi Merino, and I visited seven different classrooms to observe instruction and engagement. In each classroom, teachers were encouraging and inviting, and students were focused, lively and engaged in discussion.
In one second-grade classroom, for example, during a conversation about civics and government, students shared examples of freedom, including: “Nobody can control us.”
“You can choose how you act when you make a decision. You can show your emotions.”
“You can believe your religion.”
“Women can be in the army and do other things, too.”
“We have the right to vote.”
“People used to be separated and segregated. Now they can go places together.”
One of the most refreshing parts of being a principal is always having close access to students’ voices and enthusiasm.
Great instruction is happening in our new rotations, too! This week we launched our Coding With Kids technology classes for all students in grades 2-5, and our TK, K and grade 1 students are beginning Spanish with Senora Snider. Please make sure you have the new Zoom link from your child’s teacher. We are addressing any kinks that may arise this week and welcome your feedback to improve students’ experiences.
I want to invite you to our January Principal & Foundation Chat this Friday, Jan. 8, from 9 - 9.30 am via Zoom. Please feel free to send me any questions or topics you would like addressed, so I can be best prepared for your time.
Lastly, if you haven’t checked out Breakfast & Books with Ms. Richard in awhile, it is worth revisiting! During the month of January, the stories I read to students will center on identity, including the commonalities and differences that exist between ourselves and others. On Thursday, Jan. 14, from 8 - 8.30 am for grades 3 - 5 and Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 8 - 8.30 am for grades K-2, we will have a Diversity Club 4-U Squad Focus. Mrs. Riney, along with students from our Ally Action Club, will be leading a very special, interactive session for all students in attendance. The details can be found in this week's e-Twig.
As always, I appreciate your support and commitment during these unique times. Education is a shared enterprise, and success is always the result of combined efforts. Thank you for continuing to help make TPES the place we know and love.

Dec. 19, 2020 - The Jog-A-Thon is coming up soon, and like so many events this year, it’s going virtual!
This year we are kicking it off with a contest, asking our students to get CREATIVE and DESIGN A JOG-A-THON T-SHIRT!
Submit your design here by January 3 (i.e. the last day of winter break). The winner will be selected by a panel of judges the first week of January 2021.

Dec. 3, 2020 - Torrey Pines Elementary School Foundation is working with the San Diego Food Bank to fight hunger from Dec. 7 - 18, 2020! It’s virtual this year! Click here to explore the fun interactive website designed specifically for TPES families. You can donate specific items of food and money.
You can also drop-off physical food items at the next TPES Distribution Day on Dec.11. We will have San Diego Food Bank bins at the school to collect your generous donations!
Most needed food items include:
canned meats and tuna
canned fruits, veggies, and beans
mac & cheese
Unable to accept:
homemade food products
Nov. 30, 2020 - Don't forget to submit your points to enter the TPESF Scavenger Hunt!
1 item on the list = 1 point.
2-in-1 combination = 4 points. For example, if the list said “something with a wet nose” and another item said “something that barks,” you can earn 4 points by finding a dog with a wet nose.
3-in-1 item = 6 points. For example, if the list said “something that is pink,” “something that meows,” and “something with pointy ears,” then you can earn 6 points by finding a cat in a pink tutu!
Check Nov. 12's eTwig to get the link to submit your total number of points (via parent’s assistance) and favorite photos.

This week I would like to introduce you to our new Elementary School Assistant, Kimberly Hines. We are appreciative of Maureen Olsker’s support as our long-term ESA substitute. Maureen’s last day at TPES will be Friday, November 20, and Kimberly’s first day at TPES will be Monday, November 30.
Kimberly comes to us with many years of experience in the San Diego Unified School District. She is calm, organized, kind and very excited to join our Torrey Pines community! Our office team will now be as follows:

Please ensure you have logged onto the Parent Portal in PowerSchool to access your child’s report card. Except for grades TK and K, paper copies of the report cards will not be provided. If you have any questions, please email Maureen Olsker, school ESA. Please note, Mrs. Olsker’s last day as a substitute at our school site is November 20.
