Enrichment Teacher Feature: Meet Coach Sergio Cabrera!

We are so excited to highlight Coach Sergio!! With the generous donations of TPES families, the TPES Foundation was able to fund this physical fitness position with Playground Partners and deliver consistent curriculum and instruction every week to all students UTK through 5th grade. Coach Sergio brings incredible experience, enthusiasm and heart, and fitness expertise to Torrey Pines! Check out his note to families below, and we hope you have enjoyed hearing about everything PE related this year - from soccer and basketball skills on the field, to Junior Olympics prep, to our special classes at the Dan McKinney YMCA. All of this could not happen so expertly and joyfully without Coach! Finally, we want to congratulate Coach Sergio on winning the Executive Award from the YMCA, which celebrates his 34 years of service and for "outstanding leadership, dedication and support of the Dan McKinney Family YMCA and its mission and values." Congratulations on this well-deserved award!!

All About Coach Sergio!

My career as a physical education teacher started in 1983 to 1991 in Mexicali BC, México, and continued here at Torrey Pines Elementary School, from 1991 to the present 2025.  42 years of incredible journey, following my father’s guidance, it has been an incredible passion and a blessing to be able to share my knowledge with so many children about the importance of being healthy and physically active: playing games and sports and enjoying what life has to offer, no matter what your physical ability is! And, to live a happy and  healthy lifestyle.  In my humble opinion this is not a career, but a blessing, and I could not be happier doing what I do every day!
