March 12, 2020 - Dear Torrey Pines Families,

Thank you to those parents who reached out recently regarding the District Survey you received this past weekend. I understand families need more information about the options before making a decision about children's return to campus.

Please know that the District plans to send a second survey with more clear information about your choices before your family is asked to make a commitment to your preferred learning option.

It was wonderful to see so many students, parents and teachers at this month's Student in the Spotlight assemblies. It is a real delight to celebrate so many examples of excellence in both students’ academic achievement and character development.

One of the gifts of my position as a site administrator is being able to see the fruition of staff and family efforts in the words, actions and performance of the children we serve. On TuesdayMarch9, I was able to share this incredible teaching and learning with our Area Superintendent, Mitzi Merino, during her third Instructional Visit of the school year.

During these visits, the Superintendent and I visit a series of classrooms in a consecutive fashion, each for a short period of time such as 5 - 7 minutes. By focusing intently on what one or two students are doing in each of the classrooms, we can generate larger patterns and trends of student behavior across the campus.

Here is what Superintendent Merino and I found:

    • TPES teachers consistently hold high expectations for all students; the level of cognitive engagement is noteworthy across multiple classrooms. Academic language flourishes in conversations. Opportunities to connect current learning with existing schema abound.

    • The instruction students are engaged in is meaningful and relevant. Small groups and conferring sessions match students’ needs.

    • Students feel comfortable asking and answering questions because our teachers create safe and warm conditions for children to take risks.

    • Staff are intentional about engaging students who may be new to learning English or who may need additional learning support and tools to participate with their peers.

    • Classroom teachers, paraeducators, other service providers, education specialists, resource teachers and on-site teachers regularly collaborate outside of the live instructional time to create the best live student experience possible.

While I know online learning is not ideal, the professionalism exhibited by our team of teachers was praised widely by our Area Superintendent. As we move into Phase Two, it will be important to continue to deliver rigorous instruction regardless of setting.

Sometimes we are so consumed with the daily “ins” and “outs” of the really hard work that we miss out on some very stellar results of our efforts. Student in the Spotlight assemblies, along with Instructional Visits, remind us that there is so much good going on here at TPES!

    Have a super evening!

    Ms. Richard

TPESF VIRTUAL GALA, There's No Place Like Home

TPESF is excited to announce the 2021 Virtual Gala, There's No Place Like Home, on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

We hope you will join us for a wonderful Wizard of Oz celebration! It will be a fun night with a silent auction, live auction, and virtual entertainment. More details to follow!

The TPESF Gala is one of our largest annual fundraisers, and we are asking for YOUR HELP to make this year EXTRA SPECIAL. In these challenging times, local businesses are not able to help as much as they have in the past with silent auction donations so we looking for creative ways to help raise as much money to support TPES!

    • Do you have TIME OR TALENT to donate towards a silent auction virtual experience?
    • Can you lead a musical instrument, voice, dance, or cooking lesson for a lucky auction winner?
    • Can you share a special craft or engineering project with another TPES family?
    • Can you provide any educational, entertaining “behind the scene” tours? Do you work in a newsroom, at a radio station, or at a museum?
    • Any birthday party ideas for TPES families? Any first responders who can socially distance and visit as a special guest at a party?
    • Another interesting idea?
    • Can you donate a week from a vacation home or timeshare?
    • Are you a season ticket holder to a favorite San Diego team? Can you donate tickets?
    • Any leftover winter holiday gifts that you cannot use?
    • Other items that you can donate for our silent auction?

Please email the Gala Chair if you are able to help. We look forward to hearing from you!

Feb. 10, 2021 - The annual Torrey Pines Elementary School Foundation VARIETY SHOW is the DAZZLING highlight of the year where students get to showcase their talent and let their light shine bright on the big stage! It is guaranteed to be a NIGHT TO REMEMBER!

Last year, TPESF pulled off a fantastic VIRTUAL VARIETY SHOW and we are excited to be offering it again this SPRING! Date to follow very soon!

The theme for this year’s VIRTUAL VARIETY SHOW is BETTER WHEN I’M DANCING! So, warm up your vocal chords, put on your dancing shoes, rehearse a skit, recite poetry, show us some magic, flip some cartwheels or bring whatever you have to this year’s show! We cannot wait to see your TALENT

    February 4, 2021 - Dear Families,

We would love to see everyone this coming Friday, February 5, for our Principal-Foundation Chat (see this week's e-Twig & e-Blast for Zoom info). If there are specific topics you would like addressed, feel free to email me.

Also, if you haven’t yet completed this survey, we would appreciate your help. The School Site Council is planning for next year’s school year, and your input helps us make budgetary decisions. Thank you to everyone who has already completed this survey.

One question that continues to come up is how TPES is performing in Phase One learning. We have been conducting onsite learning since October, and we are continually refining our practices to ensure all students are safe and supported during Phase One. We recently received additional funding from our District Office to secure visiting teachers to work onsite, and we are now allowed to offer staff members pay for tutoring time outside of their contracted work day. I am hopeful that these resources will foster additional Phase One learning opportunities at Torrey Pines.

Thank you again for your support of our school. I am confident we will continue to work together to further student progress during the pandemic.

    Jan. 22, 2021 - Dear TPES families,

We are looking forward to a safe and efficient Distribution Day next Wednesday, January 27. Please note Grade 2 is not participating in the upcoming Distribution Day.

For the safety of our community, please refrain from chatting with your child’s teacher on January 27. We ask that you quickly pop your trunk so we can place materials inside and procedures moving quickly.

For those families wishing to make ONE trip to school, please come at your oldest student’s grade level time. After dropping by the tent staffed by the oldest child’s teacher, please drive to the last tent. This will have a sign indicating Younger Grade Distribution. After providing the name and teacher of your younger student(s), staff will distribute the materials.

    Thank you for your support!

    Ms. Richard
