Nov. 18, 2020 - Dear Torrey Pines Families,

This week I would like to introduce you to our new Elementary School Assistant, Kimberly Hines. We are appreciative of Maureen Olsker’s support as our long-term ESA substitute. Maureen’s last day at TPES will be Friday, November 20, and Kimberly’s first day at TPES will be Monday, November 30.

Kimberly comes to us with many years of experience in the San Diego Unified School District. She is calm, organized, kind and very excited to join our Torrey Pines community! Our office team will now be as follows:

    Kimberly Hines: Elementary School Assistant

    Jill Pallulat: Attendance Assistant

    Anna Czajkowski: School Clerk

Please feel free to reach out to us at any time. We are here to help!

On another note, families of students with IEPs, please mark your calendars for Thursday, December 10, from 4 - 5 pm for a special education parent meeting. I will provide the link for registering for this event in upcoming communication.

And finally, remember that our next Distribution Day is Friday, December 11.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We are grateful for your continued support of learning at TPES!

Nov. 12, 2020 - Let’s go on the adventure together with fellow TPES students! Try to find the items on the list, and you may become a LUCKY WINNER!

Find your student’s grade-specific list, print a copy or keep it all virtual!

Let the HUNT begin! How many items can you find? How much fun can you have?

    How do students win?

    • 1 item on the list = 1 point.

    • 2-in-1 combination = 4 points. For example, if the list said “something with a wet nose” and another item said “something that barks,” you can earn 4 points by finding a dog with a wet nose.

    • 3-in-1 item = 6 points. For example, if the list said “something that is pink,” “something that meows,” and “something with pointy ears,” then you can earn 6 points by finding a cat in a pink tutu!

    • Check Nov. 12's eTwig to get the link to submit your total number of points (via parent’s assistance) and favorite photos.

One student from TK-1st grade, one student from 2nd-3rd grade, and one student from 4th-5th grade with the most points wins a special prize. Please email Alina Mullen and Jen Fiorentino with any questions.

    Nov, 12, 2020 - Dear Families,

Yesterday, Wednesday, November 11, was a federal holiday in the US to pay tribute to the people and soldiers who have served our country in the armed forces.

John F. Kennedy reminds us, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Last week during Breakfast and Books, students and I reflected upon the reality that some children throughout the world do not have the opportunity to go to school.

TPES students shared with me that our country is about opportunity and choices and hope. More than ever, our kids appreciate the fact that they get to go school (pandemic aside) to learn and play each day!

Our military forces help provide and maintain these liberties. Yesterday, I was able to remember and thank my dad, uncles and cousins who have served in the military. I also spent a moment rereading the stories my grandpa told me about WWII. (Thank you to that high school teacher who gave me the assignment of interviewing my grandfather and recording these histories!)

And today, I am recommitting to being of service in the best way I can to the teachers, students and families around me. I am grateful to be a part of TPES, this very special place! Together we create the conditions needed for children to gain the skills and character necessary to continue seeking freedom for all.

I hope you enjoyed the holiday!

    No Place For Hate Promise:

    • I promise to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
    • I promise to do my best to be kind to everyone - even if they are not like me.
    • If I see someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher.
    • I will help others to feel safe and happy at school.
    • I will be part of making my school No Place for Hate.

Oct. 15, 2020 - Dear Torrey Pines Families,

Thank you for your continued support of our school as we enter Phase One of our reopening plan. I want to address some questions around Phase One. First, if you are wondering how we are selecting students to participate in Phase One, I want you to know that our decisions are based on teacher recommendations, classroom schedules and staff availability. All teachers have provided me with a list of priority students.

These children may have previously scored below grade level on the spring 2020 progress report, may not have met IEP goals and/or may currently be performing below grade level in one or more subject areas. Another question has come up around volunteering on campus. In addition, the District is not allowing any volunteers onsite during Phase One.

Volunteers are still not allowed to join Zoom sessions except in rare circumstances with permission from the principal. Next, if you are curious in learning more about the use of outdoor spaces, I invite you to join our La Jolla Cluster meeting today, Oct. 15, at 4:15 pm. The District’s COO, Drew Rowlands, will be there to address this question. The link can be found in the 10/14 e-Twig.

Finally, many of you have shared concerns about how we will maintain the high-quality of our online learning program once students fully return to site. I want to assure you that the teachers and I will be very cautious about the need for a continued, rigorous approach to online learning should the District direct schools to fully reopen. This is a priority we all share.

As always, please reach out to me at any time.

    In partnership,

    Nona Richard

A special thank you to our sponsors!
