La Jolla Cluster Association

The La Jolla Cluster Association (LJCA) is a 501(c)3 organization made up of parents, teachers, and principals from the 5 La Jolla public schools. The goal of the organization is to promote and support excellence in education in all La Jolla public schools. In our community, the Cluster Association works collaboratively to meet the needs of our diverse student population. The LJCA also works with the school district to implement community based school reform and the Vision 20/20 program. Cluster board meetings are held every 2 months and are open to everyone. The meetings are usually attended by Area Superintendent Julie Martel, and occasionally by a member of the school Board of Trusties or a member of district staff. The meetings are a great forum to discuss education issues that are important to our community and to learn about and how policies and practices are changing to meet the needs of our students.

The LJCA board meetings this school year have featured discussions about the LJCA Partnership agreement, the Local Control Funding Formula, recruiting new principals at the middle and high schools, the disruption that was caused by so many teachers moving several weeks into the school year, and the new math curriculum for middle school and early high school. Highlights of those discussions include:

•    Members of the LJCA board had a very productive meeting with Superintendent Cindy Marten about our Partnership agreement and another meeting is scheduled for next month.  Some items in our Agreement have no history of approval and will soon be presented to the relevant departments at the district for review. For additional background about the partnership agreement and the LJCA click here.
•    Deidre Walsh, San Diego Unified School District briefly reviewed the PowerPoint Presentation, “Local Control Funding Formula Overview.”  This is the new mechanism for funding education state-wide.  Members of the LJCA board submitted questions to her in advance of the meeting. She answered the questions to the extent that the answers were known, as the state guidelines for the funding formula had not been established by the meeting date.
•    The middle school and early high school math curriculum will change next year. This change will include the creation of new courses, Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3, which will supplant the current Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 courses.
•    The LJCA will sponsor a Cyber Safety Presentation by Jon Moffat for all community parents on March 6th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at Parker Auditorium, La Jolla High School. Jon will also make a presentation to TPES 4th and 5th grade students on March 4 at 8:45.
There will be a notice of future meeting times in the eTwig. The LJCA Board encourages you to attend.
